Research on adolescence and early adulthood says that the teen years are a critical period for the development of the brain, second only to toddlerhood. And between 17 and 24, young people engage in highest risk behaviors—sex, drugs, alcohol, extreme sports, crime, and more. The ability to control impulse and make good decisions under social and hormonal pressure can change the trajectory of a young life.

Lead Where You Standfor Teens aims to help young people:

  1. 1.Increase their self awareness, self-regulation, and composure.

  2. 2.Broaden their perspective, see options, and make smarter decisions under pressure.

  3. 3.Understand how their actions impact their relationships and well-being.

Lead Where You Stand for Teens is based on the leadership model developed by Dr. Doug McKenna. It incorporates the latest thinking and research in neuroscience, developmental psychology, and family systems theory.

By learning to slow down their reactions, step back, and think about what’s best for themselves and others, teens will make smarter choices day to day situations.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of King County and the Oceanside Institute are working together to deliver this training to teens. We know it can make a profound difference for them, their families, their friends, and our community.

GROWING YOUNG LEADERS

Can teens and young adults learn to check their emotions and make better decisions? Absolutely.

In partnership with the Teen Coordinators at the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County (Seattle, WA), Kimberly McKenna has developed Lead Where You Stand for Teens. Here’s how it works:
